Innovation

Innovation at BTCY is about making connections smarter, simpler, and more accessible. It’s how we stay ahead of the curve—and how we help our partners do the same.

In a fast-evolving telecom world, staying ahead means continuously exploring smarter, more efficient ways to connect people. That’s why we’ve always been early adopters of new technologies and active participants in shaping the future of broadcasting and telecom infrastructure.

We were among the first in Belgium to roll out DAB+ and the first to implement DVB-T2, helping modernize digital broadcasting across the country. Today, we continue that pioneering spirit by actively participating in the 5G Broadcast, in collaboration with our shareholder Cordiant and other network operators. Together, we’re working on the next generation of broadcasting—5G Broadcast, a technology that enables people to receive high-quality content without needing a SIM card or mobile network subscription.

Unlike traditional mobile networks, 5G Broadcast uses a standard broadcast mode, making it more efficient for wide-scale content delivery. It’s a breakthrough that opens up exciting possibilities—for media, public safety, education, and beyond.

BTCY Through the Years

At Belgian Tower Company, we’re always looking ahead—but our journey so far has laid the foundation for everything we do today.

From phasing out AM to pioneering 5G Broadcast, we’ve consistently led the way in telecom infrastructure and broadcasting innovation.

AM Phase-Out

2011 - 2012

During this period, we phased out traditional AM radio broadcasts, marking a major shift toward more efficient and sustainable digital alternatives. This step laid the groundwork for future-proof audio broadcasting.

Transition from DVB-T to DVB-T2

2012 – 2013

We were among the first in Belgium to transition to DVB-T2, the upgraded standard for digital television. This technology brought better picture quality, more efficient use of bandwidth, and increased channel capacity.

Switch from DAB to DAB+

2017 – 2018

With the rollout of DAB+, we once again led the charge in digital radio innovation. The upgrade allowed for clearer sound, more stable signals, and more efficient use of spectrum—opening the door to a richer radio experience.

5G Broadcast

2020 – Present

Today, we are actively shaping the future of broadcasting through 5G Broadcast. In collaboration with our shareholder Cordiant and other network operators, we’re part of a task force developing this breakthrough technology. 5G Broadcast allows content to be delivered wirelessly to end users—without the need for a SIM card or mobile subscription—enabling new possibilities in media, public safety, education, and beyond.
